I’ve been a dietitian since 1971, and was trained to tell people what to do, what to eat, and prescribe diets. After 20 years of practice, I realized that almost no one had done what I told them to do, and if they had, they couldn’t keep doing it. So, all the people I counseled about weight loss had basically failed in their attempts to lose weight and keep it off.
I was trained to believe that weight loss is a matter of “calories in, calories out”. This idea is based on simple arithmetic. If you consume less energy than you expend, you will lose weight. If that’s true, how come that never worked??
Over the past 10 years or so, research has started to reveal that this model we (the nutrition establishment and the dieting industry) have been promoting isn’t true! The body is a much more complex system than that. Here is an article about recent research on this topic that suggests that the human body is much more complex in the way it handles energy (calories) from food http://bit.ly/1gDF0ok. There are many substances such as hormones and other signaling proteins that work in a very fine balance to stimulate hunger and fullness, and to direct the bodily functions in terms of body weight status. For example, we know that some bodies simply “hold onto” calories consumed more readily than others. We also know that the body works hard to maintain current body weight. Individual people’s bodies vary greatly in how they use the energy they consume from food.
I want to say openly that I’m SORRY to all the clients/patients who I told it WAS that simple over the years. I was taught the wrong information, and passed it along to you. I made you wrong when that “formula” didn’t work. I truly regret that. I believed that if you were following a low calorie diet and were not losing weight, you must be doing something wrong.
I was the one who was wrong.
